A Relaxing Pose to Help with the Holidays

Yoga not only tones and strengthens muscles, it also has poses which help relax our muscles and our whole body. Here is a pose which is both calming and rejuvenating. It can help lower blood pressure and anxiety, allowing your body to cool and release tensions.

Legs-against-the-wall pose (Viparita Karani):  new-logo-tagline

Find a wall without any obstructions nearby. Sit with your right side to the wall and scoot your hips as close to the wall as you can while you turn onto your back, placing your legs up against the wall in whatever position is most comfortable (some people keep their knees bent and place their soles against the wall). You should be lying on your back perpendicular to the wall, with your hips as close to the wall as is comfortable. Try stretching your legs little by little by unbending your knees as far as remains comfortable, and by moving your legs farther apart against the wall. Breathe deeply and slowly, holding each position for several breaths, and try to focus on relaxing each and every muscle in your legs, back, and the rest of your body.

Watch your breath and use it to slow down. Your body and mind will respond with renewed energy and ability to overcome holiday stress!

session runs 13 weeks, from Dec. 11 - March 10

A Message from the Director:

Holiday Yoga

As winter approaches all creatures begin the process of storing energy, seeking warmth, and finding things that bring comfort and contentment.  People everywhere begin to celebrate the holidays with festivities that bring peace and joy, but that can also cause stress and fatigue.  A regular practice of yoga will help you to approach the season feeling strong, centered and ready to take-on any challenges or obstacles you may encounter.  You may even think of yoga as a gift to yourself at a time when you are preoccupied with giving to others.

The winter season naturally draws creatures more inward, and we can learn from nature to take time for resting, restorative poses.  Poses that draw our energy inward, such as forward bends, child's pose, and downward-facing dog, calm and relax the nervous system and bring about rejuvenation.  For tired, achy feet and legs, headaches, or "over-doing it", try the inverted action pose, Viparita Karani.  Translated from the Sanskrit language, Viparita means undoing and Karani means action.  So you are literally undoing any action and letting your mind and body rest!  You may also want to try meditating for short periods of time, gradually lengthening the time you can sit still and focus on your breath.  These quieting, restorative poses rebuild energy and rejuvenate the body and mind, so you can approach the outer world with more peace, and less stress, anxiety or frustration.  Enjoy the beauty, bounty and wonders of the season!  But amidst the hustle and bustle of the season, give yourself the gift of yoga, meditation, peace and relaxation.

Have a Healthy, Happy Thanksgiving!
