Cooling Poses For Summer
At the Beach or at Home
Summer is a wonderful time of year, but at times the sun and heat can be physically and mentally exhausting. Some of the best "cooling" poses are forward bends. They are calming and rejuvenating and can help lower blood pressure and anxiety, allowing your body to cool and release tensions. Whether you're on the beach or at home, instead of cranking up the A/C, find a quiet spot on the beach (or a shady, quiet spot at home) and try these yoga poses to cool your body and mind.
Forward Fold (Uttanasana): Stand tall in mountain pose, feet planted firmly in the beach sand. Take a deep breath, and as you exhale gently 
swan dive your upper body as you hinge forward at the hips, bending your knees to protect your back if needed. Legs stay firm and grounded as your upper body melts - let your head and arms go heavy. After 3 long slow deep breaths, slowly come up again and repeat 3 times. Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana): From Forward Fold, bend your knees, walk your hands forward on the ground and your feet back until you are in an inverted "V" shape. Press your palms into the beach and walk and stretch your heels down one at a time. Your dog will want to definitely help you with this pose.
Childs pose (Balasana): From Downward Dog, end with bending your knees to the ground, placing hips back over heels and stretching arms forward, forehead towards the ground. Move and breath slowly through the poses, or just rest in your favorite pose. Watch your breath and use it to slow down. Your body and mind will respond with renewed energy and ability to adjust to summer heat! |
