Yoga Classes at Synergy - Listed by Day

Synergy focuses on traditional or classical hatha yoga, which is based on the ancient teachings passed down by yogi masters for over 5,000 years. We also believe in bringing together the timeless wisdom of the east with modern science and technology of the west, as well as blending classical yoga with more contemporary styles - another aspect of synergy. Our qualified instructors will provide you with reliable guidance to help meet your specific interests and needs.

All classes are 75 minutes, unless otherwise noted. Click here for a listing of classes in alphabetical order.

MONDAY

Fundamentals (Monday 10:00 am; Wednesday 6:00 pm; Saturday 10:15 am)

Alignment based, emphasizing basic postures, and the development of core strength.  Fundamental classes incorporate more basic, functional instruction and plenty of verbal cueing designed to ensure students understand proper form and safety.

This class is ideal for new and continuing students who want to establish correct methods, and to build and maintain strength and flexibility. Highly recommended for students new to yoga, students returning to yoga after a hiatus, or students in the mood for a solid refresher on proper alignment and form.

A fundamental class can still provide any student with an appropriate challenge and, more importantly, a solid base from which to grow and develop a personal practice.

Workingman's Yoga (Monday 5:45 PM)

For every guy who has ever said, “I’ll never do yoga,” or “it’s not for me,” or “it would probably kill me,” or "I'm not flexible," or “yoga isn’t a workout” (puleez!). BUT who has ever complained of an aching lower back, tight hips or shoulders, difficulty sleeping, high stress, weight gain, aching joints, neck stiffness…

This yoga class offers a practical, no-frills approach to centering, asana, and relaxation. Communicates the benefits of practice without embellishment. Delivers results (as long as you make the time for the practice). This IS a serious but accessible workout. You WILL feel better, get stronger, reduce chronic pain, become more flexible, manage stress more effectively and sleep more soundly. Suitable for all levels, no previous experience necessary. And we promise not to say, “I told you so.”

Advanced Hatha Yoga (Monday 7:15 PM)

Challenge your mind and body, increase your heart rate, expand your established practice, and explore challenging asanas in a safe, carefully monitored environment. Ideal class for athletes and those with an established, personal practice. Can include vinyasa and ashtanga style elements, as well as advanced balance and inversion poses. This class also addresses the yogi's attention to a deeper understanding of their practice, as well as focus on the subtle body, and advanced breath techniques. This is typically a demanding workout. Closes with meditation.

TUESDAY

Victory Yoga (Tuesday 8:30 AM) (Begins August 7, 2018)

This is a gentle, hatha yoga class, appropriate for all levels. New, earlier morning class launching the first week of August, 2018. (Note that this is the same class that met at Victory Lady Fitness prior to its June 30 closing.)

Gentle Restorative Yoga (Tuesday 5:30 PM)

This class is ideal for anyone recovering from physical challenges, illness, injury, surgery, or anyone dealing with specific health considerations/limitations. Restorative yoga helps facilitate the body's own natural healing process. Gentle yoga postures are modified to meet students' specific needs.

This class is also a good alternative to any Fundamental class, and is absolutely suitable for a beginning yoga student.

Restorative yoga can also be a wonderful (and sometimes necessary) change of pace for those whose practice is routinely rigorous. The advanced practitioner can benefit from the mindful focus of this comforting class.

Slow-Flow Vin-Yin (Tuesday 7:00 PM)

Slow flow vin-yin takes a gentle step back from a typical vinyasa class. Students begin by exploring postures in the vinyasa sequence separately, then putting them together in a slow flow sequence that is breath-centered and steady, but not too rigorous. Designed to promote keen awareness in the present moment and reconnect the mind-body relationship that you may have lost over the course of your busy schedule. Class closes with guided relaxation, pranayama (focused breathwork), and a brief meditation.

WEDNESDAY

Social Barre Yoga (Wednesday 7:30 PM)

Combines hatha yoga, pilates and ballet postures using ballet barres for a highly effective, low-impact workout.  Also makes use of free weights for upper body engagement.  Barre yoga improves posture, increases muscle definition and flexibility, promotes balance and core strength, and is highly effective for weight loss.  This class will make you sweat and burn in the best way!  Suitable for all fitness levels.  Suitable for men and women...this class does not discriminate on the basis of gender!

Note also that this class does not necessarily adhere to the centering, introspective nature of traditional yoga practice. We have fun, play popular music, and encourage each other. It's a nice change of pace for your midweek!

After class, we'll all head over to a local restaurant together....why not? It's social.

THURSDAY

Low Down Stretch (Thursday 10:00 AM)

In this practice, you will remain low on the floor (back, belly, hands/knees, seat), while engaging deeper and prolonged stretching. This is a mixed level class, meaning you will experience some poses that are somewhat challenging, but practice unfolds at a very moderate pace.  Makes limited use of props to modify or deepen postures. Suitable for all fitness levels.

Core Strengthening (Thursday 6:00 PM)

Fire up your core strength and build heat from within. This class focuses on the body’s core (shoulders to knees) with emphasis on proper alignment and relatively demanding, strength-building asanas. By connecting breath with movement, this class also promotes cardiovascular fitness and emphasizes pranayama (breath work and breath efficiency). Empowers the body and spirit by cultivating both physical and mental strength. This practice is equal parts calming and challenging.

FRIDAY

Balance (Friday 10:00 AM)

This class focuses primarily on approaches to balance postures, and cultivates related attention to mindful aspects of balance in practice. Using stability balls (a.k.a. bosu balance balls), barres, weights, and various other props, this class explores and challenges your physical balance in fun and unexpected ways, while also refining alignment that promotes balance and good posture. Closes with brief meditation. Suitable for most.

SATURDAY

Power Vinyasa (Saturday 8:30 AM)

This is a physically challenging class that incorporates moderate to difficult poses in a steadily paced flow. This is an asana sequence that will make you sweat, boost your heart rate, develop your strength, and promote your endurance, in addition to providing all the existing benefits of an established hatha practice. Not suitable for beginners. Class is 90 minutes.

SUNDAY

Community Hatha Yoga - Special Class (Sunday 4:00 - 5:00 PM)

(SUSPENDED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 16, 2018)

This progressive (mixed level) class meets on Sunday afternoons at 4:00 pm, and is typically staffed by our highly capable teachers-in-training.  Experienced RYTs are also present to observe and assist. Suitable for all levels. Class cost: $5.00.

Candlelight Yin (Sunday 5:30 PM)

Journey into a quiet, meditative practice by candlelight. Release deep into the connective tissues through time-honored poses held for three to five minutes each. Yin Yoga is about gently surrendering into each pose with a focus on the breath as a tool for release, while being mindful of the body and what it is capable of in the present moment. A variety of props will be used to assist students in their journey to inner peace.

Practically speaking, Yin is a wonderful complement to traditional hatha yoga and any power or cardio routine in that this practice encourages deep-muscle stretch and release of fascia.

Prenatal and Postpartum Yoga (Select Sundays, 2:00PM - 3:30PM, twice monthly, see schedule)

Our prenatal/postpartum yoga class is designed to help expectant mothers cultivate a focused mind-body awareness, positive intentions and an improved sense of well-being for both mom and baby.

Techniques taught in class will help mothers-to-be release and relax through labor and delivery. Additional benefits include hormonal balancing, focused pranayama (yogic breathing for pregnancy) and cultivation of a relaxed central nervous system for both mom and baby.

Our prenatal series places additional focus on the second chakra, the energetic seat of feeling, sensuality and creativity, and the place where baby resides in utero, but also where vital and relevant autonomic functions for mom are centered.

New moms may continue to attend this class with their newborns in our calming, serene space, continuing their practice, which benefits the body's return to pre-pregnancy function, and supports new moms through this special, transitional phase.

Connect with a beautiful community of pregnant and postpartum women. Create space and length and build strength physically and emotionally. Share your journey of practice and the powerful process of preparation in becoming a mother.
